Friday Night Weddings

July 24th, 2010 at 02:19 pm

Last night the national news had a story on a new trend: Friday night weddings.

Seems the couples and their families have found that many places and businesses are willing to cut a deal if you get married on a Friday night. They said the photographer gave them a huge percent discount, the caterer did as well and the reception hall was cheaper too. The broadcaster talked about how folks are making weddings more affordable.

The news cast said it was "thinking outside of the box."

I had to chuckle. Twenty years ago my husband and I married on a Friday night. Our wedding itself was very small -- just a few family members. We had a reception at a small place and had cake, punch, and a few munchies. Little did we know we were thinking outside of the box!

We had our small get together because my parents didn't have a lot of money and we were going to pay for most of it. I did without the big fancy dress and my husband did without the tux. My parents bought a sheet cake and paid the $15 to rent the area. I bought the rest of the stuff -- napkins, plates, punch, and even made some of my own munchies. My soon to be husband and I decided instead of paying for a big wedding, we would use the money for a downpayment on the house. We also paid, in cash, for a honeymoon in Vegas. We came back home to a house with more than a 20% downpayment and a little cash to buy paint to start decorating.

We were thinking outside of the box? I don't think so. I think we were actually just trying to be financially responsible.

As for the wedding...our vows must have stuck...we celebrated our 20th anniversary in June!

Yipee on 20 years! We also were married on a Friday. Ours was more expensive than yours but about 14 years ago we only spent $3K total for our wedding expenses with 150 guests. I had to keep things frugal since my sister was getting married 4 weeks later!

I would say for $3K you got a deal with 150 guests! that was frugal!

Seems we were smart even then, you and I!

I too got married on a Friday night, Friday the 13th to be exact. We too, dressed in clothes we already had. I had the wedding at my house. We hired a bar keeper and purchased the liquor. My mother in law and friends brought all the muchies for the table, including the wedding cake.
We spent about $100 all total, then went on a paid for cruise. We have lasted over 33 years and I think I had a great wedding. (Friends took all the pictures too and gave them to us)

Ima we are going to Tahoe for a wedding Friday, August 13th, my husband's nephew!

I think it was a Thursday when we got married. Cost us a trip to Reno, license and $50.00 at the wedding chapel, Heart of Reno! We had $300.00 in the bank.

We got married on a Sunday. Saturday would have cost considerably more, for the same wedding. OF course, a big reason was because we planned the wedding in just 3 months - it was easier to get all our vendors on Sunday, too. I like things both frugal AND simple. That is what the Sunday wedding symbolized to me. (Sunday is close to Friday - same concept, right? Big Grin )

P.S. I agree - is having a non-Saturday wedding that hard to figure out? To save some money? Real creative thinkers we all are. Wink

I just checked 1978 calendar. We did get married on a Friday too! YD got married on Tuesday, July 4, 2006. Total wedding which was lovely was under $10,000 and that included all food alcohol, clothes, hair, nails.....flowers, etc, etc, etc. I thought that was pretty good, having 13 days to plan it!

    YD's wedding was here:

We have been to two Friday weddings and a Saturday one. Even though DF and I will probably be getting married in the next year or two I actually haven't started thinking about all this stuff Big Grin

Looks like we are smart and frugal! Woo woo...and apparently, if the reporter is correct, "think outside the box." :-)

My youngest sister got married 14 years ago on a Saturday. 100 guests at a cost of about $3K. It may have been less but definitely was not more.

I just checked and my parents got married on a Saturday, but they got married at my maternal grandparents' house where they also lived for the first year of their marriage. I think I've seen one picture from their wedding. I doubt they had many guests if any. I think my mom wore a blue dress. My mom was still in college, my dad had just graduated, and they were expecting my older sister in 3 months. They just celebrated their 38th anniversary last month.
