H is for Ham

April 2nd, 2011 at 01:59 pm

Easter will be here near the end of the month, and it's a tradition we have ham.

We found one reasonably and it is safely tucked into our freezer.

I am not a huge ham lover, but my husband is. We try to find one that isn't loaded with sodium -- yes, I know they are salty to a degree.

I've tried different ways to fixing them. I think my favorite has to be with a can of soda.

I make a mixture with Coca-Cola, honey, and Dijon mustard and pour it over the top of the ham. I then put it on low in the Crock-pot (this is an already cooked ham) so it warms up. It seems to give it a good flavor and my husband really likes it.

What do you like to use with your ham?

I don't usually eat ham, but I have to say that cola and rum (Ima's method) on ham both sound very appealing!!

OH NO! I don't put the rum on the ham! I put it in a glass with sprite and ice cubes and drink it!!

I'm waiting for the big hams to go on sale. I'm hoping it will be soon because right now they are running close to $40, but when they go on sale I can get them for around $15. I usually only buy them on the holiday sales, but then I try to really stock up. I, too, do them in the crockpot. It makes them even more tender and juicy, though I don't add anything to them like you do.

Hope you get a good sale, LuckyRobin.

Well, I guess if Ima has enough rum and Coke she might not care how the ham tastes! OK, I couldn't resist, it was just too easy. Thanks for the chuckle.

I have heard about that Coke recipe for ham, but never tried it. So, it seems to be getting pretty good reviews, then? I am always in favor of crockpots, that is for sure. They lead to amazing dishes and I love to not have to worry about a lot of hands-on work in the kitchen like that. They also offer insurance for fast cleanup, which is a plus in my book!
