Big Spendy Monday

August 7th, 2012 at 07:52 am

I am, in effect, a bit ashamed. Yesterday we went shopping at a larger city near us.

I am 51 years old and I did my back to school shopping. We spent a ton! OK, I work in education, so perhaps that is sort of justified.

I can rationalize it to an extent. I have been going to the local stores and thrift shops and have found nothing I liked in my size. I'm overweight and I hate so many of the new patterns that are huge. They are not flattering. And what's with all this sleeveless stuff? Not everyone has the toned arms of Michelle Obama. I wish I did, but as I get older, my upper arms are getting uglier. I don't have huge upper arms, but they still aren't pretty. I have lost enough weight that many of the things I own are very unbecoming -- most are years old because I haven't like many of the things I've seen in clothing the past couple of years.

So, yesterday, I took a plunge and went into a store with more classic looks. My DH is a wonderful clothes shopper, so he's ideal to take along. Bet many of you are jealous already. :-) Anyway, I found quite a few things and his comment was he didn't care how much it cost, I should get them because it is important to look professional. So, after three stores, my purchases included 3 dresses, 3 slacks, 7 blouses and a pair of shoes. Not everything was on sale, but I liked what I bought.

I always get a little upset when I spend this much money. It isn't that it put us into debt -- we have the money. I just don't like spending large sums of money and I hate clothes shopping because I have unfortunately been made ashamed of my body and therefore often think I'm not worth it. DH is wonderful and very encouraging. And as for the money, he doesn't get upset over it.

Hopefully this will help my self image a bit. A friend told me to letter my inner diva out and enjoy it. Her words were, "Let her rip!"

I never like spending big chunks of money, either. On anything. But it sounds like you needed the clothes. I'm glad you had your husband with you and that he was so encouraging! Enjoy!

Good for you! I keep my clothes a very long time and I have found that I prefer spending my money on well- made classic clothing, as opposed to trendy cheap stuff. Your husband sounds so supportive. You are truly blessed! Enjoy your new duds without guilt!

Good on you for shopping for a professional look that makes you happy. Let the diva out and enjoy every day you wear the new dresses, blouses, slacks and shoes.

We all love your husband! I find that sometimes a big clothes shop is better than trying to buy only what's on sale and make it work. You like it better and everything goes well with everything else.
    Enjoy it.

I like doing a big clothes trip once in a while. Yes, I get a queasy feeling about the amounts spent -- especially the time the credit card company called to make sure the card wasn't being charged up by a thief! -- but I feel better once I pay off the balance with cash I had in the bank and get to wear the carefully selected new clothes that I know will benefit me professionally and confidence-wise. So, long story short, good for you and bless your hubby -- he sounds like a good egg. Smile

I don't like shopping for clothes either - both because very little stylish clothing comes in W, and because the fabrics used are ... garish! Just because I'm overweight doesn't mean that I want to wear big flowers all over!

Sounds like you've got a great shopping companion in your hubby! Big Grin

I agree with you, FrugalTexan! I hate those large patterns...my mom used to work for a garment factory years and years ago...she said that the plus size stuff usually was made with the ugliest material. No wonder we have such a hard time finding stuff.

I am indeed blessed with a great hubby.

Rob I don't know what you look like on the outside but I've always enjoyed reading your posts and think from what I've read you are beautiful on the inside Smile Enjoy the new school year, I'm sure you'll look great!
