A Prada Purse

October 17th, 2012 at 12:57 am

Saturday DH and I had the opportunity to take Amtrak to Chicago for the day. We had a lovely luncheon at the Walnut Room at Macy's and then walked around in some of the stores.

One of the buildings on State Street has escalators that either go to TJ Maxx or down to Burlington Coat Factory. We went to both to look around.

At Burlington there was a Prada purse with the marked down price of $1134.

Not being familiar with Prada, this kind of surprised me. I mean, I know Prada is pricey, but I guess I didn't realize it was that pricey, and that was the marked down price.

Yikes!

I looked at it and it was nice, but I'm not sure it was THAT nice.

At lunch yesterday at school, we were discussing it. One gal we work with is always buying expensive purses. But, the concensus was we couldn't see spending that much money on a purse.

We had a variety of reasons:

1. If we paid that much, we'd have to stuff it with newspaper because we wouldn't have any money left;
2. If we paid that much we'd have to carry it until it wore out and we'd be sick of it;
3. If we paid that much, we'd be sick because we don't like to spend more than $50 (and usually less) on a purse; and
4. Name brands aren't THAT important.

Needless to say I am Pradaless which is just fine.

    With designer bags, you are not really buying the bag. You are buying the name on the bag. And no name is worth that price tag.

    My best thrift store find was a NWOT Dooney & Bourke barrel handbag in pink (my favorite color). And my mom bought it for me or $25. Smile

    I used to buy a new handbag every month. It was a standing joke with my hubby: a new month, a new purse. :=) A couple of years ago I discovered the Coach outlet store. Believe it or not, it saves me money. Instead of spending $30 every month, I'm spending $100-$150 once a year on a bag that retails for 3X that much. Because of the high quality, it holds up and I don't have urge to buy a new one. The bag I carry now I bought last February and I'm still quite satisfied with. Now having said that, I would never pay $1100 for a bag, even if it is Prada Smile $150 is my top limit

    At $11 my coincidentally 11 year old Walmart bag is the most expensive of three I own. I would never buy myself an expensive purse. Nor would I recognize an expensive purse.

    Prada handbags are designed in Italy but different elements are produced in several places in China and I believe assembled in ShenZhen. Their Head Office is in Hong Kong about 17 miles from ShenZhen...just across the Chinese border. The knock-offs are often so well done they can't be distinguished from the 'real thing.' The reason is that roll ends and production 'left-overs' are sold to 3rd parties who hire the line worker for extra pay to produce the same items in off hours they make all day. Sometimes they can pay under-the-tsble to rent the factory floor after hours so the girls are working on the same machines they work all day. Other times they rent space in an empty factory and bus the workers.

    If they use fresh from the farm/village staff you can get the real fabrication but poor workmanship. After several months those girls will be good enough to get hired at the real factory.

    The fact is the culture in China is so-o different. They took another road to survive their turbulent history. Incredible numbers of parents have no money to send their children to schools which are private-for-profit institutions not government supported. Anything called The People's Republic of _____________ means individuals must do whatever it takes to get enough food to survive and some kind of shelter. There are no social programs, no food stamps, no food banks, no unemployment insurance, no foster parent programs

    The people of China are very proud of the fact that people are no longer dying of starvation.

    When I was shopping for a Mother-of-the-Groom outfit, I looked at a jacket at Neiman-Marcus. Just the jacket, not the jacket-and-dress. It was more than $1K. Maybe it had fantastic workmanship, but nothing on earth could induce me to spend that much on an article of clothing! What a waste of good money.

    I have wonderful memories of dining in the Walnut Room (when it was Marshall Field's). I haven't been there in a while, but I might have to go back sometime this holiday season!

    I want to give Joan of the Arch a big hug. She made me smile.

    And seriously, that's an INSANE amount of money.

    I have 3 main bags. A large leather bag the color of caramel that I like very much that I got extremely marked down at Kohl's a few years back for like $20. It's huge. I could fit a 20 pound turkey in there.

    The 2nd bag is a very pretty blue leather with a big buckle, a birthday gift I picked out for myself from my ex, Dr. Bob. I think it was from mMay's.

    The third is a Burberry plaid bag, another gift from another ex.

    Funny you should bring up handbags today. I was looking at my Liz Claiborn purse and it's filthy. I've been using it for more than 5 years. I bought it at a garage sale for $2 - or maybe a buck after negotiating. At the same sale I bought a designer bag that came with it's "storage" bag (and how dumb is that? A bag to hold a bag?). I bought it for $4 bucks and sold it a week later for $75. No wonder this lady needed to hold a garage sale. She probably used the money to pay for the credit card bill on which she charged all that crap. :-)

    The purse I am still using is less than a year old - I bought it last Christmas in CA at K-Mart for $20 I think. This summer when I was in San Francisco, the strap broke and a kind lady walking behind me gave me a metal clip thing to hold the strap onto the purse. The purse is starting to come apart in other sections, so I think it will barely make it a year. I am starting to think that maybe I need to look for a better made purse - because finding the *right* purse is a hassle, and then to have to do it in less than a year? Ugh!

    What features make it the *right* purse? How big? How heavy? What color? External phone pocket? Adjustable shoulder strap? Key snap? How man internal sections/pockets? Magnetic closure? Top quality zipper?

    Does anyone else use *Kangaroo* organizer...lightweight insert with multi pockets to hold our stuff and transfer to another bag intact.

    Snafu - for me, a *right* purse has to be on the small side (my current one is about 2x as big as I'd prefer), and have an outside pocket big enough to fit my iPhone in (something that snaps.) I also prefer black. It is amazingly difficult to find something that fits just those characteristics. I'm not too worried about what is on the inside of the purse.
