Good eating

We did our weekly grocery shopping. We spent around $100. We have the same things for breakfast so I didn't include them...DH has cereal and I have yogurt and take a Thermos of coffee with cream to work. I also take a piece of fruit in my lunch. Someone told me at work they are too tired to cook after school and I said I was pretty tired too, but making things ahead after figuring up a weekly menu sure helps.

Menu
Saturday night - pork loin roast, sweet potatoes, stuffed mushrooms, green beans, fruit salad
Sunday brunch - scrambled eggs, sausage, toast, cheesy grits, fruit salad
Sunday supper - Sloppy chicks (sloppy joes made with ground chicken), chips, cheese, fruit salad
Monday - lunch - leftover sausage and grits
Monday - supper- Yankee pot roast with carrots, mushrooms, onion, and celery, boiled potatoes, cottage cheese
Tuesday - leftover sloppy chicks
Tuesday - supper - chicken stew and crackers and cheese
Wednesday - lunch - leftover chicken stew
Wednesday - supper - leftover pork and gravy, mashed potatoes, salad, fruit salad
Thursday - lunch - leftover beef and vegetables
Thursday - supper - chicken and noodles, salad, cottage cheese, fruit salad
Friday - lunch - leftover chicken stew
Friday - supper...treat...we are going out. :-)

Fortunately DH doesn't balk too much about leftovers for lunch and if I rework something for leftovers into something else, he won't complain. And he loves eating at home.

    DH and I always take leftovers...of course, both of us each only has 1/2 hour for lunch, which makes it very hard to run out and get something, get back, and eat...I think that is actually a good thing...less tempting! Smile

    Well done, having a plan for meals and having the makings is more than half the battle. That 'what will I make for dinner' as you walk in the house after a hectic day topped by a stressful commute is enough to sink the best of intentions and send you to the take-out menu. For colleagues who complain about the difficulty of meal planning, I've suggested they try ZipList for ideas. No need to make entrees no one likes or in the suggested sequence but it's a starting point.

    I've found it 'me' time to sit down with the grocery store flyers that come in Thursday's newspaper and list the 'loss leaders.' Most stores will meet the advertised price of their competitors so no need to do the '3 store stop stomp.'
    It's incredibly easy to roast/bake/grill poultry/beef/pork for family, sit down, Sunday dinner with sufficient leftovers to convert to plan-overs for the remainder of the week.

    Fish only takes 2 minutes per inch, quality pasta 9 -12 minutes, potato, rice, or Quinoa + salad in a bag is instant. Pick whatever veggies your family will eat and dinner is done. You can use dessert as a bribe for those who clear the table, load the DW and tidy-up. I've made it a house rule that no food goes to the table until the food prep zone is tidy, pots/pans soaking in the sink in the hottest possible water.
