Informal Lima Bean Poll

January 30th, 2017 at 10:51 pm

Since My English Castle posted about having some lima beans and the fact they are haunting them...I thought for the fun of it, I'd ask my Facebook friends what they thought. My question was simple, do you like lima beans? The results were interesting and closer than I imagined they would be: 36 said yes and 45 said no. Those who said no, were adamant they disliked them. Many of the those who said yes often added they had to be fixed a certain way or in soup.

As you can tell, I am easily amused. Smile

Ha! That is fun! Some of my friends and I have a foodie group on Facebook; I should put up a poll (and also see how many of them knew lima and butter beans are the same!).

I've absolutely never had lima beans. I guess I will have to try them.

You're funny! Lima beans are so gross I can't even handle it.

Lima beans are yucky! Even my mom and one of my sisters (who are both big veggie eaters) don't like lima beans.

And I want to know who is the "genius" (NOT) who decided that combining them with corn (to make succotash) was a good idea??? What did corn ever do to that person ??

Oh Rob, you've made my day! And we know I agree with Kaycee Fisher. I dumped another half cup or so into the leftover Asian dumpling soup that DH had for lunch--after I took my portion out! Out, out, damn lima. I will admit to eating this recipe and liking it a lot. But the recipe has to be doubled or you end up with vagrant butter beans (aka lima beans) again.

    Chancery Warm Bean Salad

1/3 cup plus 3 tablespoons apple cider vinegar

    ½ cup packed brown sugar

    ¾ teaspoon dry mustard

    ¼ teaspoon garlic powder

    ¼ teaspoon salt

1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

    ¼ cup chopped onion

1 cup canned baby lima beans

1 cup canned dark red kidney beans

    1 cup canned butter beans

1 cup canned Great Northern beans

    1 cup canned black beans

    2 cups canned baked beans
    Preparation:

In a saucepan, combine vinegar, brown sugar, mustard, garlic powder, salt and pepper. Cover and set over medium heat. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer 5 minutes.

Add onion and simmer an additional 5 minutes. Remove from heat.

    Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Place all but the baked beans in a colander and rinse well. Drain and put in a large baking pan. Add baked beans without draining them and mix well. Add liquid mixture and mix well, being careful not to break or mush beans. Cover with foil and bake in preheated oven 30 to 40 minutes.

MEC!?!? Does this recipe have both butter beans and lima beans in it? I'm more confused than ever!

I might just do the same thing - lighten the mood of my feed a little. Smile

I dislike beans in general, but I think Lima beans are okay. I don't think I could sit and eat a bowl of them, but if they are mixed in with other vegetables, I eat them fine. They don't seem to have the same texture that other beans do that turn me completely off.

I do like lima beans, and to my surprise I found out my husband also does!

Ok, with not a lot of response - Of 16 responses, I had 3 haters. 6 loves, 4 likes and 3 ok if made a certain way.

OK, I asked my foodie group about lima beans, and I got 5 "don't mind 'em"s and one "Grossed me out as a kid, have avoided them since, but willing to try them again." No one said they loved them or hated them. Smile

I had two more responses, both hated them. Guess my Facebook friends are adamant one way or another. Smile

I'm just not sure how to address the fact that this recipe--from a used-to-be-famous Milwaukee restaurant includes both butter and lima. Perhaps we can add broad beans to this mix to wreak havoc everywhere?

I have to add this...I had a friend who commented on this...she feeds her bird stuff and it seems to like vegetables, but it refused to eat lima beans! Smile
