Pioneer Woman

January 22nd, 2012 at 04:42 pm

Have you seen the new Foodnetwork show called "Pioneer Woman?" I watched it this week and was interested because although I knew she blogged, I hadn't really delved into it.

I guess I thought she would be cooking on a cook stove in a long dress. What a surprise to see a very modern and large kitchen.

It was an amusing program as she cooked for 15 and had pork, augratin potatoes and a slaw. Real food that filled a plate and it wasn't a contest.

I know competition is a big deal, but to be frank, I'm tired of all the contests on television. I never cared for shows like Fear Factor and some of the cooking shows are bordering on scary when they show bizarre ingredients.

I think Foodnetwork has figured decided that everyone loves competition.

Well, I for one am tired of it. I watch the shows to learn new techniques, new recipes, and sometimes to be entertained. I'm not saying there shouldn't be shows like Chopped or Next Foodnetwork Star, but why is it almost all the programs are going for that? I can't watch most of the programs during the day because I *ahem* work. If I didn't, I couldn afford the basic cable I have.

So, on the weekend during the afternoon and evenings when I can watch, all there seems to be are those shows that compete.

So, seeing Pioneer Woman was both refreshing and interesting. Although not a true pioneer, perhaps her title is being a pioneer of being someone who cooks in a society that usually doesn't.

Read her blog, then you'll know why she calls herself the "Pioneer Woman"

Love her blog, love the show.

I saw the preview for the show but forgot and missed it, I'll have to watch for it to air again. Shows like that really interest me. I like to learn new things and try different recipes.

I agree, I'm tired of the emphasis on challenge shows on the food network too. I used to watch that show alot, but I watched the cooking shows. I do like chopped, but don't care for most of the challenge shows. I used to like the Barefoot Contessa the most, but she's had a lot of reruns and they move her all the time. Right now, my favorites are Secrets of a Restaraunt Chef and 10 dollar dinners. I do like the Pioneer Woman show, although I think there is something not quite right about how calm she is during all the chaos Smile

If you're looking for new techniques and new recipes, then this show isn't for you. Ree Drummond aka The Pioneer Woman has ransacked community cookbooks, food courts and convenience foods for her recipes. Pure and simple, she's a plagiarist and rarely credits the sources of her recipes.

Just last Saturday, she demonstrated how to prepare chili. One problem, the recipe was ripped off Wick Fowler's 2-Alarm Chili kit, http://tinyurl.com/86x3yjf

I haven't seen the show, but I did read her book that talks about how she met her husband. It was quite fascinating and enjoyable. I think I borrowed it from the library?? Anyway, if you get a chance to read it, I'd highly recommend it. (Oh, its called Pioneer Woman)
