Garage Sale Grumblings

May 11th, 2013 at 04:29 am

On HGTV there is a new program where two families compete by having garage sales. They put out tons of stuff and get primo prices. Not sure how realistic is it for "reality TV", but interesting to see what they reuse and redo a d put out.

That being said, we went to some garage sales last weekend and most were, well pathetic. I am almost shocked at what folks think others might want. So many had clothes and most of the clothes were pretty tired looking. As for goodies, the term slim pickins comes to mind.

I know not every sale can have things that interest me, but I wonder if folks think ahead and realize in order to make money, they have to have some stuff to sell to make up for the ad and the trouble.

How are the garage sales in your area?

I've only been to one sale in our new town. It seemed to have nice things, but I felt overpriced for a garage sale...lots of rubber stamps, but still priced at over $5 each! Might have picked one or two up if they were a $1.

I have seen rubber stamps out as well and I agree, most are overpriced...guess they figure scrap bookers will pay the big prices...

I've been seeing a lot psuedo estate sales - what happens is that the person/family is moving or dead or just doesn't want to run the sale themselves. They commission a company or a group to administer & hold everything in the house up for sale. Since they are getting some $ for doing this (don't know if its flat or a percentage) the prices are terrible.

    Baselle,
We have a couple of folks doing the estate sale thing too and many of the prices are book prices. Hello! We live in the Midwest and we don't get coastal book prices. Frustrating!

Plus book prices only really apply if the item is unused and is "new", made within a year or two - your cheap a@$ 20 year old item doesn't qualify, coastal or not.

You know, lately I've been having the best luck with either a church sale in the afternoon, or with a yard sale the second day and chatting with the owner.

The stuff is picked over, which is great because any overlooked gems kind of "pop" out and if you don't see anything, the decision is made for you. Also, sometimes what happens is that you share what your interests are and the owner, having something they didn't think would sell, would offer something from the back. I got about 25 lbs of stained glass - all different colors for mosaics - for $10 that way.

I'm trying to remember the last time I went to a garage sale ... maybe 2009?? My church had a yard sale a few weeks ago, but I had other plans that day (babysitting.) Other than that, I don't know of too many in this area.

Ever see the PBS show Market Warriors? I love it. Even the "professionals" - trying to make a living at it - get snookered too.

Yes, I have seen that program. It is nice even the experts get fooled once I. Awhile.
