What would you change?

September 4th, 2010 at 02:57 pm

Do you everlook back and regret things you did or didn't do? I was reading a devotion that talked about this.Are there things that you would change?

That was the question asked in a survey a number of years ago. The only thing special about the survey was the question was asked only to people who had celebrated their 95th birthday.

It was an open-ended question.

It could be answered any way they wished.

No religion was connected with it and there was no anticipated response -- just the question: Is there anything you'd like to change about your life?

Of all the different responses which came back, there were three appearing with great regularity.

Those three were

1. I would reflect more (the most popular answers);
2. I would risk more;
3. I would do more things which would live on after I'm dead.

Most of us are not yet 95 years old.

Even so, I wonder how would you answer that question?

I think I do need to reflect more. And I guess we all want to do things to make us remembered. However, I'm not much of a risk taker, so I'm not sure #2 would apply to me. But who knows, maybe as I get older, I'll take more risks.

So, how would you answer the question...what would you change?

    Well, No. 1. We already reflect enough around here. We have had a lot of close family members die in our family and sicknesses that it keeps our family grounded.

    No. 2. I am not big into risks, unless I have no other choices. But, I am not one to tempt fate.

    No. 3. I believe leaving a legacy is always a good thing. Having traditions or helping others which would live on after I am dead, as long as it was positive, would be great. We should all do more of this.

    I'm only 23, so I guess I don't have the experience or wisdom really to have deep and meaningful answers...Big Grin but one thing I would change is to stop waiting around for other people to do what they say they're going to do, and to speak up more. It seems to be the story of my life so far. But, in saying that, I will probably step out the door today and continue on as if I hadn't just said that. Smile such is life!

    Wow. That is a good question. I'd like to answer it a different way. Before I die, I would like to make sure my DD is trained to manage her life and circumstances. I'm only properly doing that myself at the age of 45.

    On #2 I am curious on the level of risk. Risks can be small or big. I am not a risk taker by ANY means, but I was just thinking the other day that so many people are scared to make positive changes in their lives, you know, because it's "scary." I do think that calculated risks have been very positive in our own lives. (Any risk we have taken has come with Plan A, Plan B & Plan C! I also think it is easier to take these risks when you are younger. So at 33 I may remember a lot more risks that I will not be taking when I am in my 40s, 50s, etc.).

    I don't really have any answers. Personally, I can't say there is anything I would change. I am sure that may change in 60 years!

    Omgosh. My sister and I has this out all the time. If only we could do it over, we would not be so afraid to make decisions.
