Are you making a list?

April 25th, 2020 at 07:41 pm

After watching the news, both local and national, and reading stuff online, I often wonder how the food supply is going to hold up. There were stories where dairy farms were dumping milk and Florida farmers were plowing under crops because they could not get their products to market. More recently many of the meat processing plants have had to close due to Covid 19 cases and I read an article in the Chicago Tribune last night where some of the places that do the actual butchering are also closing. I'm not saying let's go hoard food, but do you think it is likely we will have a shortage in the next few months?

I always try to keep a full pantry and freezer, but decided the other day to be a little more organized and made a list of things I feel I need to have on hand. Most of the stuff I already have, but I figure it was a good incentive for me to check to make sure.

I have more on hand than normal only because I am respecting the role of limiting our trips to the store. We eat meat, but can survive without it. We also try to limit our processed food and sugar for health reasons. I'm sure many are buying less and going without because of fear of going out, which is unfortunate when clearly if they have to dump or destroy product there was plenty.

I pray we open up very soon...and that all continue to be well.

I'm pretty well stocked because I am trying to only grocery shop once a month to keep trips to a minimum. As I use things and notice I am down to the last one of something, I put it on my shopping list for next time. It's working pretty well so far. I do wonder what the meat situation will look like next time I go though.

I have used a list like yours for years. I like to have the ingredients on hand that I commonly cook with. I used to think it was in case we had a snow day I could cook whatever popped into my head. Now looking back, I think it is because my mother always had a decent store on hand. Obviously, now is different because I am not going to the store every week. Still keep the list though to plan from.

We are pretty well stocked right now. I don't eat meat, so ... but DH does, he might not like dealing with a meat shortage. I probably should get more rolled oats to have on hand, and maybe a few spices. Other than that though, our pantry/freezer/fridge is full.

I guess I kind of have a list in my head of things I always want to have on hand. When I run low, they go on my physical grocery list. I think we may be facing spotty food shortages in the future and we will all have to be flexible about what we eat. I, for one, am more fully stocked than usual right now, and I've spent more on groceries than usual. We'll see what next month holds.

The heartland states were some of the ones that either never shut down or did so much later and are seeing the consequences now, and that's where much of our food supply comes from. Numerous meat processing plants (over a dozen) have closed due to so many employees being infected with COVID.

The milk and produce thing isn't shortages. Just the opposite, actually. They have an abundant supply and simply nowhere to sell it because most of their business is with restaurants, not retail stores.

We aren't doing anything special to stock up. Although certain items might become a little harder to come by, I don't expect any major shortages. We always have stuff in the house. If we can't get chicken one week, so be it.

I am pretty stocked up, but locally there are things that are difficult to get. I am trying to get an extra a few at a time to make sure I have things in my pantry.

Like others, I don't worry about a meat shortage since I don't see it as a necessity. Also we have local farms so I suspect that meat/eggs/milk (none of them necessities in my opinion) will remain plentiful.

I do now have a stash of foods to sustain us if we couldn't go to the store for month. Not our favorite foods but food that would continue to nourish us. Mostly beans, rice, PB, veggies & fruits, etc. And pet food.
