Do what you can...

February 8th, 2025 at 06:26 pm
Being content...I think it is a big objective in our lives as we move along on our financial journey. Getting away from the mindset of keeping up with the Joneses or Smiths or whatever has caused so many people financial duress, that's for sure. I'm a big fan of Theodore Roosevelt because he seemed like a smart fellow who was always on the go, but smart besides. He is quoted as "Do what you can, with what you have, where you are."
I know when I was younger, I was always wanting stuff. I grew up not having a lot and always thought if I made more money, bought more things, it would make me happy. But I learned that isn't the case. I'm not talking about if you are dirt poor and don't know where your next meal is coming from, but if you are housed, clothed, fed, and relatively healthy, then one would hope you'd find contentment and use what you have for the best.
So, I'm doing what I can. That doesn't mean I'm not spending money, because I am. But I'm not buying lots of stuff I don't need or want. I'm looking for ways to save, but not to the point where I'm so cheap that I'm doing harm to myself or someone else. I'm volunteering at church, doing different things to help out. I'm working around the house trying to make do with stuff.
I spend a great deal of time in the kitchen. I've was wanting a new kitchen towel to hang on the fridge. But then I realized that is just wasteful. But I had crochet cotton and a spare button, so I crocheted a towel and sewed on a button so I could attach it to the handle. I didn't need the towel and I am not planning on using it as a towel. I just wanted something bright and cheerful since we are in the gloomy winter months.
Are you doing what you can with what you have?

    Hi,
In a fun coincidence, being content with who and what you are was the theme of the book we read yesterday for bookgroup. Is the universe typographic me on The head with that message? I say that with a grin!

I think becoming content naturally happens as we get older. Especially once we retire, there is less opportunity to have more or keep up with the Jones' since we are no longer earning income.

Your post reminded me of an old friend from high school who shopped as entertainment and loved buying lots of useless trinkets, especially ones centered around different holidays, like Halloween. She had decorations for the entire house, and so she'd change out everything with each passing holiday. I have not been in touch her with her but have often wondered if she is still of the same mindset.

I myself was a bit of a shopper when I was younger. If a new store opened in town, I always wanted to go and at least check it out. I liked to buy things on trips or at craft shows and felt a little disappointed if I went to one and came back empty-handed.

I definitely do still spend money, but more intentionally so. Spending on my home is usually a good investment and if it makes things more comfortable around here, I feel it's fine. I also have no problem spending money on any kind of travel or experience.

I too am fortunate enough to say that I am now finally content with my life, and hopefully I can keep this up. As you say, it definitely helps to not care about keeping up with the Joneses.

Every year I like to have a theme in my life, something to think about when I am making decisions. This year it seems to be "Make it do." I am shopping in my own house, mending things, substituting when I can. I am so frightened by our current administration I feel compelled to save more than I ever have.
