A tipping rant

Let me preface this with, I believe in tipping those folks who provide a service such as a hair dresser or a server. I understand that the tip is actually part of their pay. 

But, and this is a big but, the tipping thing has gotten out of hand. I was looking to order some food for Easter. Food that I will pick up, heat,  and serve. I couldn't understand why the price was so expensive and there it was, at the end, a large tip tacked on. Fortunately I caught it, but good grief, why would the program do that. And who would get the tip if I left it? It's been that way for other things such as when you use a kiosk (sometimes I don't have a choice and can't go to a person and there it is...the tip option. Let's see, I'm doing the work to place the order and then leave a tip too? 

I think it has gotten out of hand, don't you?

    Tipping is out if control. I've decided that when making reservations, I'll ask if there is a mandatory service charge. It's ridiculous. Last month a group of friends went to dinner and we split the bill, each being hit with a $54 service fee.

    we dont tip in australia, some places have tip jars but not many and most tips they give to charity...but I have seen a lot of people online complaining that everything is automated but they still add the tip and like you said why...your the one doing all the work...

    I also think it has gotten out of hand. To be clear, I am happy to tip my hair stylist, at a sit down restaurant, valet, or bellman. However, I ordered at a sandwich/salad type place the other day and was prompted to tip. This is a place that you walk in and order at a counter and walk out with your food 5 minutes later. Ridiculous!
