Saving Money by Spending Money

Bet that title make you scratch your head!

But, I did have to spend some money so I could save some. The little town we live near has a small, but active library. Unfortunately since we live on the outskirts of town, we don't pay library tax which means I couldn't get a library card unless I paid the equivalent of what we would pay in taxes to the library. I contemplated it before taking the plunge. I didn't want to get the card and then feel like it wasn't worth the cost.

This little library is pretty busy as far as activities. I've taken advantage of a couple of craft nights which had everything included. Another one is coming up this week with stamping kitchen towels. That sounds like fun. We've also sat in on "True Crime Night" where the library director gives research on true crimes.

I've missed being able to check out books and since it is part of the system of interlibrary loan, even though the library itself is small, I can still get books from other libraries.

So, I spent the money to get the card and according to the little receipt, I've already "saved" money by checking out books. I have gotten some nonfiction how to books plus some mysteries. I believe having a library card is being frugal since I will use it.

So, I spent money to save some! Books are expensive!

Some things really are worth spending money on. Nice of you to support your sort-of local library.

When we first moved here and I went to get a library card, I was surprised that I had to prove my address and they had to look it up to make sure I was in the city limits. They don't do that in California, so it was new to me.

Totally worth paying a little money to have a library card!

wow that is different our library cards are free here and if you get a onecard network you can borrow from any library that is a part of that group...never heard of paying for a library card...even kids can get them if their parents/legal guardian register them...my daughter is an avid reader and has been since aged 2

It's fun that your receipt tracks the savings for you! Seems totally worth it- books ARE expensive, and I have saved a ton borrowing audiobooks for long car trips form the library. Also like that it supports a resource everyone can use- I used to live in a poorer city, and in bad weather or during the day, a homeless person could go read there quietly in a safe, clean, air conditioned environment while the overnight shelters were closed.

Mumof2: normally our library cards are free if you live in the city limits of wherever you live. Since we don't, I have to pay the equivalent of what our taxes would be if we did.

I think just supporting the library is a benefit.
I live in Boston and our library system is magnificent and maybe my favorite use of my tax dollars.

My mom was active with a library on Cape Cod that was essentially self supporting - one paid employee, everyone else volunteers.
About 20 years age (wow, time flies) they raised a million dollars to build a stunning addition - donations plus lots of fun fundraising events. They have an active craft group that was formed then that still raises @$10,000 every year.
They have a meeting room that is almost in constant use, support a Free Little Library where they give away books at the beach, have a computer center, kids programs, plus books.
When I want to do something to honor my mom, I usually send them money because it was such a special place to her.

Thank you for supporting your library!
