Enjoying some bounty and keeping busy

May 12th, 2026 at 05:41 pm

I don't know why, but I can actually post photos again. I tried over and over for the past year and it would give me an error message, but yay! Pictured above are the radishes and onions I picked Saturday. It's nice to have fresh veggies to enjoy with our meals.

DH has been using his laser and he made an ornament for a granddaughter for her graduation this weekend. He loves making stuff like this and although he's had some trial and error, he's learning a lot.

Last week we went to a thrift store and bought a dining room table. We had one, but I didn't feel like it was very sturdy. I grew up around buying/selling furniture because my parents had a used furniture store when I was a good, then a vintage shop later. It was an adventure taking it apart since it is oak and I couldn't lift my half of the table. But we got it in, it's cleaned up, and I'm more than delighted.

For Christmas DH gave me a hummingbird feeder that has a wifi camera. We have had a ruby throated hummingbird visit. We don't know if it is the same one or one of many, but it is fun to watch him/her drink. I've named it Harry. DH's late wife called this property Hummingbird Hills so it's only right we have a hummingbird feeder. Over the weekend I planted some wildflower seeds that are supposed to produce plants that are hummingbird and butterfly friendly.

For some reason Facebook has decided I'm going to be a prepper, basically someone who is figuring the world is going to go to pieces and I need to stock up and be ready. Granted, I like to have a well stocked pantry and all that, but some of these things are frightening. But some of the stuff they are saying is true as far as problems growing things, so not sure if people like to raise an alarm or if I should be incredibly concerned. What do you think?

Congrats on picture posting! They are really lovely pictures indeed. Is that just with your phone, or something else?

Wow that laser engraving tool makes some pretty amazing results. Now I want one haha, but for the sake of my wallet, I better not look into those things.

You know, recently, I have been on a huge bird-watching kick on YouTube. I don’t know why I am finding them so fascinating, but somehow I do. I guess I’ll post them in a separate entry but… is this also a sign that I’m getting old? But seriously though, birds are fascinating. For example, I recently learned that hummingbirds shed their body weight in waste water. Apparently, while they drink flower nectar, that nectar is actually very heavy, so their metabolism has to shed that very quickly to maintain their ability to fly.

As for being a prepper, I am definitely being lumped into that category hahaha. Uh, I don’t think I’m hardcore into it, but I have for example, enough food to last say at least a week in case of power outage, a severe storm, or maybe I can not or do not feel like going out to get food or water for some reason. Stuff like that. I also have a modest battery bank with a small but capable solar panel. You know, nothing serious, but social media will still think I am a prepper and love to share more ads and videos related to it. I don’t think there is anything wrong to be prepared for realistic contingencies. I do have to disagree with people who literally prep for the zombie apocalypse or something like that though, because not only is it unrealistic, but even if it is, it also costs a lot of money to prep for doomsday scenarios.

I think it's prudent to grow your own food if at all possible. Especially now. It's probably criminal that I use so little of my land to grow food, but then, it takes a lot of labor to manage it all. We've had a very chilly spring here on the East Coast, so aside from some snow peas that are just coming up, I'll be planting hopefully everything this weekend, when it's supposed to warm up considerably into 70s/80s. Tomatoes, Cucumbers, dellicata squash, zucchini.

Tabs, yes, I used my phone for the photos. And I don't think you are a dyed in the wool prepper...you aren't planning for the end of the world, just making sure you have what you need. As you said, being prepared for realistic contingencies. DH loves his laser and as I say, there's something gratifying about creating something to give to someone. As for bird watching...why does that make you old? And if so, who cares? It's enjoyable and free!

PatientSaver, sounds like a wonderful garden!
